When you’re a beginner at Renegade Professional, it is so easy to be overwhelmed.  Dozens and dozens of videos on all types of subjects can distract you.

If you manage to make it through Renegade Professional, then there are all the other distractions on the webs–the newest launch from the latest internet guru, the latest changes from Amazon and Google, the emerging social media tools.  It’s a jungle to get lost in.

A chai wallah does one thing: he makes tea.

He makes tea day in and day out. Over and over.

I remember when I was in India how the chai wallahs would enter the trains at every stop and each had their own way of calling “chai”. They would squeeze up and down the aisles with their pots and glasses, at all hours of the day or night (you never got a quiet time). They would shout about their chai is such a way that the words ceased having meanings and became a song.

Are You Willing to Become a Wallah?

To become a wallah, you must specialize.  Avoid distraction and do the same thing over and over until you become good at it.  And after you have repeated it over and over, your own unique mark will develop.

Focus on one thing and ignore the rest until you become good at it.

I never knew that you had to fail to succeed.

When I was growing up, I was taught that failure was, well, failure.  Failure was not supported.  Failure was something to be ashamed of.

It has only been though building a business that I have made friends with failure.  I fail.  I get up.  I move on.

When you want to start a business, it is really important to find niche markets which are profitable.

Twitter is a great way to find profitable niche markets.

There are many guidelines for finding niches, and of course, many times people make considered choices to disregard those guidelines.  But in general, to find niche markets you will look for:

• High demand.  You want to find a niche which has many searches for the service or product you are supplying.  Find out what people want. What are they looking for?  What do they need? Low demand can make building your business slow.
• Low supply.  The fastest way to profit is to find niches which are under-supplied.  If there is a lot of supply, this may indicate that a niche is particularly profitable and worthy of your business–or it may mean its over saturated.  Research a lot and make a considered decision.  You want a niche where people are desperate for a solution.
• Good monetization potential. You’re in business to make money and you want to be sure your niche is profitable.  Find a niche were people are willing to pay for their solutions.

How do you find these elusive perfect niches?

Twitter is a great way to find out what people are talking about.  It’s like listening in to hundreds of conversations at once.  You learn what people need, what they hate and what they love.

In “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell, Malcolm suggests that all expertise is preceeded by 10,000 hours of practice.

This idea began with a study of elite musicians in Berlin’s Academy of Music.  When they asked the question, “What distinguishes the musicians who were destined to go on to be the world’s finest artists, from the ones who would be merely very good?”, they found something very interesting.

The very best musicians had practiced 10,000 hours*.

All of the students were exceptional.  Just making it into this music school meant that they were already among the very elite players.

But the very best had practiced more.  The merely very good averaged 8000 hours of practice and good musicians had practiced only 4000.

Malcolm goes on to show this trend in everyone from the computer geniuses of our time (men like Bill Joy and Bill Gates), to leading athletes to the Beatles.  It’s all over.  Great people put in hours and hours of practice.

This is very important to those of us starting a business.

Often we hear of the “instant success” story.  We marvel at the grandma from Cedar Rapids who, within a year of starting her business, was earning 6 figures.

What we don’t hear is that she was practicing for years.

All of us need to practice our skills.

And like children learning any skill, all of us need to allow ourselves to not be very good.  We become accustomed to skillfulness as adults.  Being clumsy is uncomfortable.  But clumsy is what we must do to become great.

What do you need to practice?

What are your scales that you must repeat over and over to get right?

For today, write down one thing to practice for your business and do it.  Do it poorly or well, but commit yourself to practicing fully.

And by the end of the day, you only have 9999 more hours to go.

*By the way, 10,000 hours comes to 20 hours/week for 10 years.  LOTS of practice.
